What to expect from your General Practice

Your first point of care

Your General Practice (GP) is usually the first place to go when you feel unwell, need health advice, or have an injury.
You may hear your GP referred to as a medical centre, family doctor, health centre or GP clinic.
Your GP team can include doctors, nurses and other health professionals. They can provide treatment, health checks, referrals and ongoing support for your wellbeing.

Fees

Enrolling with a general practice usually means you'll pay lower fees because the practice receives government funding to support your care. Each practice sets its own fees, so costs may vary.
If you visit a practice where you are not enrolled, you may be charged a higher casual patient fee. This can apply even if you have a Community Services Card (CSC), although some practices offer reduced casual fees for CSC holders.
We recommend checking fees directly with the practice before your appointment.

Enrolling with a GP

It's free to enrol with a general practice or Māori health provider, although consultation fees may still apply.

Contact your preferred practice directly to check enrolment availability and begin the enrolment process. Availability can change, so we recommend checking before you visit.

What you may need to enrol

Most practices will ask you to complete an enrolment form.

You may need:

  • Proof of identity (such as a passport or birth certificate)

  • Proof of eligibility for publicly funded healthcare

  • Your current contact details and address
